The best place to discover everything you need to restore, maintain, modify and repair your Land Rover Defender, Series, Discovery, Freelander and Range Rover. Working with one of the biggest stockists of Land Rover parts we take a look at how things are made, whats the best option for your vehicle and how to avoid buying the wrong parts for your build.
Here's how to fit new Series seats into a Defender for just £50
We want a classic, heitage look with our Land Rover 110 rebuild. Fitting Series style split doors is just the beginning. We've decided to tear out the worn old seats and flog them on Ebay for £300. We then chucked in another £50 and bought brand new Series seat frames, seat base and seat backs, with MUD seat risers. Two new Defender seats would have been just under ~£800.
The idea still needs some work but we discuss all the pros and cons to this conversion in this video.

1986 with glass fuses I would say n/a diesel. :)
Hi Ive just got a Mantic strong arm from you for the rear door on my defender 90 unfortunately ive got some problems the bolts on the top hinge of the door have what look like collars which have been welded on the inside so the door plate will not sit flat and i did not want to drill bigger holes in it. also i have no handles inside so no strong points to fix to, do you have any suggestions Regards Kevin
Hi Kevin, you can space the plate out from rivnut mount out to match the collars with washers. You might need some longer hinge bolts. You don't need special mounts for the roof plate. Just position it centrally and drill into the roof support edge. This is where the handles are mounted anyway.
Did the Sealey sprayer clean up ok when using the 2K paint/Raptor? Good to use on repeat jobs?
Yes, I thoroughly cleaned it with thinners and it's good to go.
what is the diameter? 3 inch?
What wheels are those and what offset, would be great to have a vid about wheel choices and what will fit on older Defender hubs.
I'm not sure that legally you can use those seats as I'm sure it says somewhere in the MOT handbook about if a certain standard is met at time of manufacture you have to maintain that standard, like not fitting seat belts because the seat your putting in is from an earlier model, maybe someone knows more.
Could I call about the VAT Free purchased through the HM VAT Free program for US Service members? Lots I want but have to go through third party vendors.
Maybe you could include more support for the seats in a single loop type roll over protection and include the top mount for the seat belt. Might be a bit spendy though😄
I fitted the mud risers and leather seats from an RX8, very pleased with them. I bought export trim seats originally but they were just too small and I wasn’t overly impressed with them.
I used to have a stage one v8 csw which had the bar behind the seats
I'll have to try and find some pictures
TBH, that seat back would last about 5 minutes as it is. A brace is a must have, but, by the time you fiddle around with a brace, you would be better fitting proper defender seats.
"Full Metal Bracket", the unsuccessful sequel to a good movie.
Jeez, that removal is brutality! Better, but more work, is to remove the dash top, which is a hassle but worth it. You can get it all out without destroying anything.
Still dont understand why they dont produce a decent car, well put together, not leaking, not rusting like a bucket. Takes no more effort.
Why cant seats be reupholstered? New seats are never really necessary unless another design is required.
I will have a Series Landy which will have a canvas top. Retirement present to myself. 😊
It’s a shame that this link doesn’t seem to work? I’ve watched the previous ones and enjoyed them 😢
Nice work
No need for the swearing. Keep it clean
I know. I've cleaned up my act since then!
Coming along really well and on the real DIY side. I once painted a 90 using aerosol cans, gloss white, cannot remember how much I used but the result was really good. looking forward to see this finished.
Great video - inspired to give this a go! Which rust converter did you use on the seat box covers by the way?
Good video great job thanks Danny
Looks good. Must admit, not keen on the new dash, but will be interested to see the finished result.
Awesome job there. Very impressive the way you show what can be achieved by a self builder. Cheers Rich
You’ve outdone yourself mate, looks amazing so far!
The raptor black - did you use 1K or 2K paint? Great job on the interior
Looks awesome
I really like Raptor when it's used in a subtle way, I already rolled it on the outside of my off road Discovery and plan to use the aerosols next time I paint the interior. Maybe worth grabbing a cheap rivet gun adapter for your drill before your hands seize up!
Is that a thing. I need to look into that!
Hi Fraser, I don’t always get to watch all your videos, so it would be useful if at the start you would give a couple of sentences of into as to what the overall project aim is. I have no idea what your plans are here, so something like “welcome back to the open top beach defender build that we are taking to pendine sands” or “the cheap overlander build that we are taking to the highest Greenlane in the Uk” would really help. Cheers 🍻
Cheers for the feedback. You can check on earlier videos in the playlists. This is the 110 soft top conversion in the list.
@@LRLiveUKcheers, I’ll take a look
Looking good, Raptor really is forgiving. I’ve used it a lot on the inside of my rebuild. Are you going to sound proof /insulate as well?
What constantly surprises me is that iron, S.Steel items are used on aluminum without the use of rubber/plastic flanges to avoid electrolysis.
I bought the one you demonstrated a few months ago. It is well too forceful. Wife cant close the door and is wary of opening it. Can struts be gas swapped over ?
I'm afraid not. The set up is very different.
Im liking the colour
Just remember, stainless steel and aluminium don't play nicely together, so should be isolated by a non conductive tape/washer/mastic etc.
Sparks and a lead acid battery, not recommended!
Don't tell my mum!
Pick up you dummy!
I've seen it happen, went off like a hand grenade, covered the panel beater and the car in acid, near new Scirroco.
Last summer I went to test start our Plant Generator and for some reason one of the battries exploded and the acid went all over the place. Its serious stuff mate. So easy to remove two bolts better than replace a battery.
@@gorifranka Its not the battery you have worry about, it's your eyes and face. Acid in your eyes and plastic shrapnel covered in acid piercing your skin, not pretty!
I am constantly surprised with the amount of enthusiasm you work on these badly designed rust buckets. Hat off !!!😊 Those hinges surely should have had a rubber flange between door and hinge. Poor workmanship/design.
snake oil
Thank you! Still very relevant today with my second hand hood and hood sticks (seem to be genuine Land Rover no less!)
If the drum will not free spin, how do you get the cable off to work on it
love it
If you're already getting your rated fuel efficiency why would you think it would make it better lol
I'm in the process of fitting mine. I did need to file one of the door-mounting holes oval so that the bracket would rotate far enough to bring the third hole into alignment over the frame. I also noticed that the bolts in the door have raised bosses around them so maybe larger holes would allow the bracket to sit tighter to the door. A bigger problem is that with the gas strut in place, when I come to close the door the strut reaches maximum compression and locks up so the door can't be closed. I suppose I'll have to drill a new hole in the body mounting bracket to give enough room for the strut to compress without binding. I was careful to mount the body bracket centrally even though I don't have grab-handles in my car.
It is quite a precise fit but worth the effort to get it right. Make sure neither ball end joint has unscrewed slightly making the strut longer. We could look at making the door mount single hole slotted vertically to allow some adjustment. Thanks for your feedback.
@@LRLiveUK Thank you. I've now completed the installation successfully. I had to drill an 8mm hole 22mm further inboard to make room for the strut (which was indeed fully screwed onto the ball joint). The door bracket needed one of the hinge bolt holes to be extended sideways by about 5mm and that allowed the bracing hole to rotate over the door frame. The system is now working well. It opens the door with a slight cushion effect as it reaches fully open and begins applying closing effort at around 20cm. It closes fine with the weather-seal in place and with enough authority to close the latch which has always required a bit of a slam. I have left the strut at full pressure at least for now. The brackets are well made out of 3mm steel. They are very strong and sturdy. The powder coating is thick and appears good quality, it won't be exposed to weather in any case so should last forever. The door opens to 90 degrees. I'd have to disconnect the strut if I wanted to open it any wider but I would only gain about 25mm so very unlikely to ever be necessary. A good investment for £65 (by the time VAT and postage in UK are added) and this solves the swinging door annoyance that has been irritating me for the entire ten years I've owned the car.
so helpful-reckon i have exactly the same problem so booked dave in although its a right schlepp to get to him i reckon he knows his onions thanks again for a brilliant video-keeping discos alive! (glad you kept it)
Defenders are a cult vehicle. Badly engineered, a pig iron chassis with an aluminium body, iron bolts, stainless bolts, galvanised bolts breaking due to electrolysis, leaking like a colander and cheap and awful fittings making the finish below par. Boys with their toys!!!! Landcruiser gives me a well engineered motor and body as Mitsubishi did, but in comfort. I dont want to customise a car. I leave that to the manufacturers for which I pay them.
That's a shame. You're missing out!
@@LRLiveUK No no. Its a shame for landrover as they won't see my money. Very happy with my landcruiser cruising the land 😂
'bout time, nice and sturdy with a simple look.
This should've been saved for Halloween, the dreaded door bolt removal and that horrifying bulkhead autopsy.
I presume you mean he should have drilled out the bolts? If so, why didn’t you say so? Also, what’s the bulkhead got to do with it? It doesn’t feature in this video at all.
Well it looks like I’m going to have to buy a few more discs for my grinder😱 I reckon it’s going to be all four doors with hinge cuts. Can’t wait for the next instalment. Great vlog 👍🏻
After 1:01, I have heard enough, do not using a grinder which will most likely burn the paint work or even worse damage a panel, just use a drill with the correct diameter drill bit then drill down to the counter sunk part of the screw head, it will be a lot quicker and it makes you look like a professional, after you have drilled heads off use a of vise grips then remove from the shoulder of the bolt/ screw from the spire clip sample as that. Last point the reason that the screws are spinning is that the retaining part of the nut isn’t being retained in the clip, I.e. the fingers.
I disagree. Because of the cross head shape of the bolt heads drill bits shatter very easily and as most people don't wear eye protection when drilling this is an absolute no. Trust me, I've tried both methods and I've shared the one that works the best. A bit of practice with a grinder and cutting disc and you'll have no trouble cutting the hinges safely. As for vice grips on the bolts - that doesn't work either. I tried, on camera and it was too painful to post.
Really like your style of presentation . Very easy to listen to and informative.
Hi are you selling the top/sides and rear door I’m looking for those for mine.
